SIAM@Purdue Student Conference 2009
On March 30th, the Purdue Student Chapter of SIAM will be hosting the first inter-disciplinary applied and industrial
mathematics student conference here at Purdue. This conference will highlight the breadth of computational and
applied mathematics research that is being done across the different departments. It will allow students to see how
the modeling and numerical techniques that they use are being applied in other disciplines.

Poster Session
The Computing Research Institute is soliciting contributions to a poster session, which is being planned in conjunction
with the Purdue Student Chapter of SIAM's first inter-disciplinary applied and industrial mathematics student conference
here at Purdue.
The poster session aims to bring together researchers - both faculty and students - in the diverse fields of
high-performance computing at Purdue. Both application and systems research posters are solicited. For example, an
"application poster" could showcase computational methods for materials research that are enabled by high computer power;
a "systems poster" might show a new interconnection network to build high-end computer systems.
We are also interested in posters that show educational activities related to high-performance computing.
A jury will be deciding on a best-poster award.
Format of the Poster Session:
- Place: STEW 302
- Date/Time: March 30, 2009, 12:00 - 2:00 pm
- Each participating project will be given an easel/poster board/thumb-tabs to display their work.
- For each poster displayed, a faculty member or a grad student should be present during the session (12-2pm).
This year the CRI poster session is co-located with the SIAM@Purdue student conference. Poster registration will be done
at the conference web page
http://www.purdue-siam.org/wp/?page_id=19.
To register, please enter your information, including a poster title and abstract, and select "poster presentation".
Registration is free.
Supercomputing 2008
Purdue Faculty will be presenting their research at the Supercomputing 2008 (SC08) conference in Austin TX, on Nov 18
and 19. Participants at the SC08 conference are invited to attend these talks at the Purdue booth and discuss research
issues. Please contact Melanie Lindsay at lindsay@purdue.edu to set up
appointments if you desire to meet with specific faculty.
View the Purdue brochure.
JOB FAIR@SC08 Brings New Activity to the Conference
SC08 and the Broader Engagement Committee will sponsor a student job fair for the first time in the history of the
conference. We are excited about beginning a new activity that we hope will grow and flourish into something
bigger and better in the years to come. The job fair is available to all full-time students participating or attending
the conference.
The Job Fair will take place on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 in Room 8C in the Austin Convention Center from
1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Valid student identification will be required. Students interested in participating in the job
fair should contact Barbara Fossum at Barbara.fossum@gmail.com, or you may
request to join our group in Linkedin at
http://www.linkedin.com/groupsDirectory?results=&sik=1224700816228
Exhibitors are strongly encouraged to participate. This is an opportunity to interact with potentially over 300
students attending the conference, and a chance to meet with a fresh group of bright individuals seeking job and
internship opportunities.
Each exhibitor participant will have a table with access to electricity where you may meet with students individually
during the course of the afternoon. Additionally we will have a small venue set up with a screen and projector where
you may wish to schedule a brief overview of your company and the opportunities available. Please limit this
presentation to 20 minutes.
If you wish to sign up to give a presentation, please email
Barbara.fossum@gmail.com with "jobfair-presentation" in the subject.
HPC Luncheons:
The HPC Luncheons are held monthly as a discussion forum for HPC researchers at Purdue. The events are sponsored by the
Computing Research Institute (CRI) - which is the HPC branch of the Cyber Center - and ITaP's Rosen Center for Advanced
Computing (RCAC).
Thursday, November 6 - Guest speaker Dr. Paul Hovland
Tuesday, December 2 - Guest speaker Dr. Jayathi Murthy

CRI Poster Session
The Computing Research Institute is soliciting contributions to a poster session, which is planned to showcase research
related to high-performance computing, on November 6, 2008 from 4pm-6pm, in the Commons of the LWSN Building. Secondly
we are looking for electronic posters to be presented at the Purdue booth of the SC'08 Conference in Austin TX,
Nov 15-21, which will be displayed continuously on a large monitor in the SC08 booth.
The November 6th hard copy poster session aims to bring together researchers - both faculty and students - in the
diverse fields of high-performance computing at Purdue. Both application and systems research posters are solicited.
For example, an "application poster" could showcase computational methods for materials research that are enabled by
high performance computing; a "systems poster" might show a new interconnection network to build high-end computer
systems. We are also interested in posters that show educational activities related to high-performance computing.
A jury will award prizes for the three best posters.
There will be a reception accompanying the poster session.
Format of the Poster Session:
- Place: LWSN Commons
- Date/Time: November 6, 4pm-6pm
- Each participating project will be given an display board(4'x6'display surface)/poster board/thumb-tabs to
display their work.
- For each poster displayed, a faculty member or a grad student should be present during the session (4-6pm).
Please let Melanie Lindsay know by October 24th, if you are interested in
participating.
Please send her the following information (by October 24) for each poster you plan to present:
- Title of the Project
- Names of faculty and students involved 3. Name of the person to be present during the poster session 4.
A short (max. 100 words) abstract of the project.
For those needing a place to have a poster printed, there is a poster printer, located in MRGN 233, which is now
available, at a small cost, for staff and students to use. Please arrange a time with the poster print staff to have
your poster printed and picked up. (Please allow 48 hours for poster to be ready.) For more information contact
Joshua or Paula.
The electronic poster for SC08 will need to be sent to
Mindy Jasmund or Larry Beihl
by November 6.
Please see the electronic guidelines and the
PowerPoint template that will work best for the e-Poster display.
